Content components We’re connecting the Ferndale Trail to the Anniversary Trail as part of our greenways plan to expand and connect our shared paths for walking, running and riding. These works also form part of the approved Boroondara Bicycle Strategy 2022.This greenway will connect Ferndale Park in Glen Iris with Frog Hollow Reserve in Camberwell. To create this new path, we’ll need to remove some existing vegetation but we’ll also be planting new vegetation and trees to help improve local wildlife corridors and habitat.The construction of the new trail will occur in phases and we’ll keep you updated as we get closer to beginning construction. Works are expected to begin with a new trail with a gravel surface connecting Elizabeth Street and Somerset Road in mid-2026.What we’ll be doingAs well as constructing the new path, we’ll also be:upgrading existing gravel paths with new gravel and new composite edging completing other improvement works so this new link can be used for walking, running and riding.Crossing safety improvementsWe’re underway with our investigations and design work to improve safety and ease of access at key crossing points along this new trail, including:building a path priority crossing in Denman Avenue to line up with the trail – this is being investigatedadding a new street-based path connection along part of Gilbert Parade and Tyrone Street – design currently in developmentbuilding a raised path priority crossing in Fairmont Avenue to line up with the trail – design currently in developmentbuilding a raised path priority crossing in Culliton Road near the trail entry and exit point – this is being investigated.We will also be completing the following trail works, pending required approvals and funding:adding a new pedestrian operated signal crossing on Toorak Road at Back Creek Reserve – subject to Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) approvalconstructing a new path on Council owned land from Back Creek Reserve to Camberwell Road. This includes land recently acquired from the former Hartwell Tennis Club site, as well as existing Council land on the eastern side of the creek between Toorak Road and Camberwell Road – design currently in developmentadding a new pedestrian operated signal crossing on Camberwell Road, near Fordham Gardens – subject to DTP approvalbuilding a new shared path along part of Culliton Road to the Anniversary Trail – design currently in development. A new bridge over Back CreekSubject to planning permit approval and funding, we’ll be building a new bridge for walking, running and riding. The bridge will cross Back Creek in Back Creek Reserve. It will connect the Denman Avenue/Ruskin Road area of the reserve with Somerset Road and to Toorak Road. Greening the trailOver the next 3 years, we will be replacing some grass areas in the northern section of Ferndale Park (north of the oval towards Denman Avenue) and converting them to mulched biodiversity garden beds with indigenous plants. We will be planting additional native vegetation to:benefit local wildlifegreen and enhance the appearance along the trailsupport community access to nature.
