Content components We’re installing a public toilet at Eglinton Reserve in Kew.We chose this park based on community feedback from the Public Toilet Strategy consultation and Boroondara Community Plan consultation. Eglinton Reserve has been prioritised because:the area is popular with families, children, cyclists, dog walkers and visitorstoilets would support longer visits to playgrounds, BBQs and eventsit would improve access for older people and those with special needsthe nearest toilet is about a 5-minute walk away.StatusConstruction will start from mid-February 2026. We expect works to be finished by mid-2026 (subject to weather conditions). How this may impact youDuring construction:You may hear construction noise on weekdays between 7 am and 3 pm (excluding public holidays).Access to the park, BBQ area, basketball court and playground will remain open.Pedestrian access to the pathways will remain open. Community consultationBetween September and November 2025, we asked residents and park users to share their views on a proposal to install a public toilet at Eglinton Reserve. We heard from 93 community members during the consultation. The majority of people (79 people or 85%) who had their say are in favour of installing a new toilet at the park. With this support, we’re moving ahead with installing a public toilet in the location we proposed within the park.Find out more about the community’s feedback by visiting our New public toilets in Boroondara page on Your Say Boroondara.About the designArtist impression Features of the public toiletDesignThe public toilet will have: one accessible cubiclecream and green colours to blend into the natural surroundingsaccessible fixtures and sizing to fit prams and wheelchairs, including wider doorsbaby change facilitiesgrab rails to support older people and people with a disabilitygender-inclusive facilitiesa privacy screenan outdoor sinksharps containerssanitary bins for sanitary products, incontinence products and nappiesa bike racka lower mirror and basinhooks and shelves to hold bags and coatsa soap dispenser and air dryer.Opening hoursThe toilet will be open from:6 am to 7 pm – 1 April to 31 October6 am to 9 pm – 1 November to 31 March. It will automatically locks at all other times.Cleaning and maintenanceThe toilet will be:cleaned at least once a day, including checks for toilet paper and general upkeepdeep cleaned once a week.Any issues (for example blocked toilets, broken fixtures) are reported immediately by our contractors.Lighting and safetyThere will be lighting inside and outside the toilet during operating hours. The toilet has been designed following Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, making sure it's:visible from surrounding areasfaces busy pathssurroundings kept open with no hiding spots or obstructions. The location of the toiletWe’ve carefully selected a site for the new toilet near Disraeli Street. The toilet will be close to the playground. We’ve chosen this site for the following reasons: it avoids a flood-prone area near the shelter that could cause long-term maintenance issuesit allows space for a future parking bay to be installed near the toilet, with improved accessible features for people using wheelchairs and older community membersit protects large tree roots in other parts of the parkit connects to existing water and sewer infrastructure. To help maintain privacy, the toilet will be near trees and set back about 9 metres from the nearest property.
