Content components We’re renewing Stradbroke Park south oval on Burke Road in Kew East. These upgrades will improve the sportsground playing surface and surrounding area for local sporting clubs and the wider community to use and enjoy for years to come.TimelineWorks are expected to start in early September 2026, weather permitting, and finish by April 2027.About the projectSurface renewal worksThe renewal works will involve:replacing the existing playing surface with new natural turfreplacing the existing turf cricket wicketinstalling a new irrigation and drainage systeminstalling new football goal posts and oval fencing.Lighting upgradeWe are also upgrading the training lights at the south oval to energy efficient LED lighting. The 4 light poles will be replaced and repositioned within 10 metres of their current locations to meet Australian standards. You can see their new locations in the diagram below. The existing light poles are 22 metres high. The new light poles will be 30 metres high, which will better direct the light down toward the playing surface. The new poles will be charcoal in colour and automatically turn off at 9:30 pm.We’ve already installed upgraded light poles nearby at the north oval at Victoria Park in Kew. The new lights there have reduced light spill compared to the older-style light poles.Barbecue and picnic tables relocationWe also identified that the BBQ near the playground by the north oval is rarely used. As part of these renewal works, we will relocate the BBQ to the Burke Road end of the south oval, next to the pavilion driveway. We will also build a new accessible 1.8 metre wide concrete path from the car park to the BBQ and picnic area. The 2 existing picnic tables will be relocated to be closer to the BBQ.Relocating the BBQ and reconfiguring the seating in this area will create a multipurpose space for community members to enjoy next to the south oval.We will also relocate a bin from nearby to the new BBQ area and remove the rail between the picnic area and the car park to create a space for the path. How this may affect your visitThe south oval will remain closed during the works. The existing BBQ and picnic area will remain open for the community to use while the new BBQ and picnic tables are being installed. The north oval and surrounding open spaces will remain open.Pedestrian access around the pavilion will remain open, so everyone can still use the space and public toilets. The off-lead dog area will still be accessible and the playground will stay open. The vehicle access point from Burke Road to the south oval will be used as the construction access route and will therefore be closed to the public during the works. All public on-street parking along Burke Road, adjacent to Stradbroke Park, will remain open and accessible.Sportsgrounds nearbyWhile the south oval is closed, the north oval will stay open.Other sportsgrounds within 2 kilometres of Stradbroke Park south oval are:Victoria Park, KewMyrtle Park, Balwyn North Hays Paddock, Kew East.
