Naming our roads, places and features

Our process for naming roads, places and features in our community is governed by the Victorian Government’s Naming rules for places in Victoria, Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2022 (‘Naming Rules’). 

The Naming Rules set out the mandatory principles and requirements for naming roads, places and features across Victoria. They help ensure naming is undertaken consistently and supports community benefit and public safety. All naming proposals that we consider must comply with the Naming Rules.

Our Naming Policy supports the implementation of the Naming Rules by providing a local framework for assessing and managing naming proposals within Boroondara. 

Our approach to naming

We structure our naming process for the naming of roads, places and features to:

• reflect community values
• recognise local history and cultural heritage
• comply with the Victorian Government's Naming Rules and our own Naming Policy (download below).

Below is a step-by-step outline the of the naming process that we use. While this is the process we generally follow, some steps may vary depending on the nature, complexity and circumstances of the proposal. 

The time it takes to complete the naming of a road, place or feature varies, and depends on the consultation, research required and complexity of the project.
