As we age we’re more likely to catch infectious diseases which can make us sicker than when we’re young. For this reason, it’s recommended older people are regularly vaccinated against several common and dangerous diseases.
Council offers public immunisation sessions at convenient locations around Boroondara, including most libraries. No appointment is necessary and it saves having to wait with sick people at your doctor’s office.
You can get your annual flu shot at these sessions and if you’re 65 or older it’s free. Flu vaccination is recommended no earlier than May each year to coincide with influenza’s peak season from June to September. For more information visit the Flu vaccination page.
Council can also provide Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis boosters at these sessions which are especially recommended for new grandparents.
You will need to see your doctor for Pneumococcal and Shingles vaccinations as the medications you are taking and the timing of the vaccination is sometimes critical.
If you are over the age of 50, you can now get the COVID-19 vaccine under the Australian Government’s roll-out.
The COVID-19 vaccine is free, safe and voluntary. Getting vaccinated will help protect you and your community.
Visit the Department of Health website to find out more or to check supplies of the vaccine in your local area.
Even if you feel healthy, you should visit your doctor regularly. Early detection of health issues can make all the difference when it comes to treating them.
For a full list of health checks and vaccinations recommended for older people, see the Regular health checks information on the Victorian Government's Better Health Channel website.
Visiting your doctor regularly will also help you to safely manage your medications. See the Better Health Channel's Medicines - safety issues web page for more information.
And since an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, why not keep your doctor happy by looking after your health and fitness all year round?
