Update on NELP-funded tree planting

The North East Link Program (NELP) is providing funding for us to plant trees in our parks and reserves.

In 2025, we completed NELP funded planting of 137 trees in Columba Street Reserve.  NELP has also funded tree planting in Hyde Park (70 trees) and Freeway Golf Course (120).

A further 80 trees are being planted this year in:

  • Grovedale Park (Surrey Hills)
  • Naroo Street Reserve (Balwyn North)
  • Ropley Avenue Reserve (Balwyn North)
  • John August Reserve (Balwyn)
  • Cooper Reserve (Camberwell).

Further tree planting is being planned for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

Most parks where trees are to be planted undergo rigorous soil improvement.  Species to be planted complement the existing character of each park and provide much needed shade and habitat for local birds, mammals and insects.

Information on the tree planting activities are posted at each park ahead of planting and a letter box drop is also conducted to inform residents living nearby of upcoming planting activities.
