Tree Canopy Replacement Plan

The construction of the North East Link Project (NELP) is expected to remove at least 3,000 trees in Boroondara.

Our Tree Canopy Replacement Plan has been developed to help guide the replacement of the native vegetation and amenity plantings being removed from Boroondara as a result of the project.

The plan aims to maintain and enhance our City’s leafy green environment by planting 4,000 new canopy trees over seven years, providing more shade in open spaces as the new trees grow.

It also provides an opportunity for a planned approach to canopy tree planting, using appropriate species in well-designed and remediated sites that will thrive in future climate conditions.

The plan has been developed in alignment with our Boroondara Tree Strategy, Shade Policy, Boroondara Open Space Strategy and Biodiversity Strategy, and is supported by State Government data on vegetation cover, urban heat and social vulnerability factors within Boroondara.

Areas of impact

We have proposed canopy tree replacement works to be undertaken in 30 parks and reserves across the municipality as part of this plan.

Tree planting at sites where land is being acquired for the North East Link (NEL) or where construction works are occurring will start once NELP works have been completed. These sites include:

•    Koonung Creek Reserve, Balwyn North
•    Freeway Golf Course, Balwyn North
•    Boroondara Tennis Centre, Balwyn North.

NELP is planning to pilot its tree planting program this year.  We will provide further information on selected sites in Boroondara once this is confirmed.
