North East Link Project Tree Canopy Replacement Plan

The North East Link Program (NELP) is providing funding for us to plant trees in our parks and reserves. 

We’re planning further tree planting for 2027 and 2028. We’ll confirm next year’s tree planting locations in late 2026.

Where we planted this year

From August to early September 2026, we planted 375 NELP-funded trees at 19 parks and reserves across Boroondara: 

Ashburton

• 10 Clifford Close
• Markham Reserve
• Markham Reserve East
• Markham Reserve South
• Pitt Street Reserve
• Watson Park
• Winton Road Reserve.

Balwyn

• Minifie Reserve
• Mont Albert Park.
• Balwyn North
• Freeway Golf Course – 16th and 18th holes
• Wandeen Street Playground.

Camberwell

• Cooper Reserve
• Hartwell Station Reserve.

Glen Iris

• Sinclair Avenue Reserve.

Hawthorn

• Grace Park.
• Hawthorn East
• Anderson Park.

Kew

• Kellett Reserve
• Park Avenue Reserve.

Kew East

• Harrison Reserve North.

How we choose trees for each location

Most parks where trees are to be planted undergo rigorous soil improvement.  Species to be planted complement the existing character of each park and provide much needed shade and habitat for local birds, mammals and insects. We carefully select species to ensure they will survive and thrive in future climatic conditions.

Tree planting updates

We share information with the community about these tree planting activities by putting up signs near the planting area or sending a letter to residents who live near planting locations. We aim to share information at most locations.

NELP-funded tree plantings

In 2021, we planted 70 trees at Hyde Park in Kew East. In 2023, we planted 120 trees at Freeway Golf Course in Balwyn North. In 2025, we planted 134 trees at Columba Street Reserve in Balwyn North. That same year, we also planted 84 trees across these locations:

• Grovedale Park (Surrey Hills)
• Naroo Street Reserve (Balwyn North)
• Ropley Avenue Reserve (Balwyn North
• John August Reserve (Balwyn)
• Cooper Reserve (Camberwell).
