City of Boroondara has beautiful parks and gardens that can be used for outdoor events. This guide will help you organise an event and find information about permits and approvals.

If you are organising an event on a road, visit our Occupying a road or footpath page.

When to book

Gatherings with less than 50 people that don’t involve any third-party vendors or additional infrastructure don’t need a booking.

You may still need additional permits depending on the type of activities involved. See our Before you book an outdoor space page for common permits.

You will need to make a booking for gatherings involving any of the following:

  • more than 50 people
  • third-party businesses or professionals
  • additional infrastructure like marquees or generators
  • a wedding ceremony.

Complex events

We recommend allowing at least 12 weeks to plan large-scale or complex events.

Items and activities that aren’t permitted

Your event is not allowed to have:

  • animal farms, petting zoos or pony rides
  • reptile farms or live animal enclosures
  • jumping castles
  • amusement rides
  • portable barbecues of any kind
  • fog machines
  • vehicles or horse-drawn carriages
  • motorised vehicles or equipment
  • pegs or stakes to secure equipment in the ground.

Other things to consider

Day of the event

On the day of the event, make sure that staff and volunteers:

  • manage waste responsibly
  • know what to do if there is an emergency
  • comply with food and beverage responsibilities
  • adhere to any conditions set out in permits related to the event.

After the event

After the event ends, we will inspect the event area to ensure the space is left in the same way it was before the event.

Bond refunds

  • The site must be cleaned and undamaged for an event bond refund.
  • If there is waste or damage, we may retain funds to cover the clean up or repairs.
  • If you paid a key bond, this is refunded once the key is returned.
