The Boroondara community continues to enjoy a high standard of health and wellbeing. This is supported by local data and consultation with community members and key stakeholders.

However, there are still areas where improvements can be made. Through extensive research and engagement, we’ve identified 6 priority areas that will guide the next Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan (2025–29). These priorities reflect the most significant, preventable causes of poor health and wellbeing in our community, and where Council and our partners can have the greatest positive impact.

The 6 health priorities are aligned with the Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2023–27. They focus on creating a healthier, safer and more inclusive Boroondara for everyone.

Our 6 health priorities

Improve mental wellbeing and social inclusion

We want everyone in Boroondara to feel mentally well and socially connected at every stage of life.

This means strengthening access to mental health support and inclusive services, reducing stigma, and creating opportunities for people to connect and feel a sense of belonging.

Tackle climate change and its impacts on health

Climate change is already affecting our health — from extreme weather to worsening air quality.

We’ll work to reduce emissions, build climate resilience and support adaptation, helping to protect health now and into the future. Climate action is also a health action.

Increase physical activity and active living

We’re encouraging an active lifestyle through sport, recreation, and active travel.

Being physically active helps people stay healthy, socially connected, and safe — and supports more vibrant, liveable neighbourhoods.

Increase healthy eating

Good nutrition supports physical and cognitive development, disease prevention and overall wellbeing.

We’ll focus on creating healthy food environments that make it easier for people to choose nutritious foods every day.

Improve gender equality and prevent gender-based violence

Everyone deserves to live free from violence and discrimination.

We’re committed to promoting gender equality and preventing all forms of gender-based violence, including family violence, through community education, partnerships and advocacy.

Reduce harm (from injury, alcohol and emerging harms)

Reducing harm means taking a proactive approach to issues like injury, alcohol-related harm and new and emerging public health risks.

We’ll work with our partners to promote safety, raise awareness and create environments that support healthier choices.
