National Mental Health Month (MHM) is a month dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and wellbeing and promote better health for everyone in Australia. The initiative runs for the month of October, and the theme for this year is building resilience in communities and creating connections. World Mental Health Day falls on Monday 10 October 2022, and aims to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world.

The importance of mental health and social connection is reflected in both our Boroondara Community Plan 2021-31 and the Children and Young People’s Action Plan 2020-25. We encourage everyone in Boroondara to mark Mental Health Month by taking time for yourselves and connecting with your local community.

Boroondara Youth Hub

The Hub is an inclusive space for all young people. Come down, hang out and:

  • Play on the Nintendo Switch or scratch that retro itch on the Wii
  • Challenge your friends or the Hub staff to a round of pool or table tennis
  • Register for our fully equipped and sound proof band room
  • Catch up on study, get support and advice from the youth team.

headspace

headspace offers young people aged 12 to 25 a welcoming environment where they can access confidential mental health support, health advice and general information.  Headspace Hawthorn is co-located as part of the Boroondara Youth Hub at 360 Burwood Road in Hawthorn.

To celebrate headspace day 2022, headspace Hawthorn are running an Art Space for 16 to 25 year olds who enjoy art and want to try something new. headspace Malvern are running a Paint a Pot session involving planting succulents in your painted plant pot and pizza, for 12 to 25 year olds.

We work with local community organisations to create opportunities for connection and to encourage positive mental health outcomes across Boroondara.

Exercise outdoors

As the weather improves, take advantage of the Spring sunshine and get your endorphins pumping! We provide free exercise machines placed in parks or along shared paths. The equipment is easy to use, with signage and instructions explaining how to use the equipment.

You’ll find outdoor exercise equipment at:

  • Koonung Creek Reserve
  • Balwyn Evergreen Centre
  • H A Smith Reserve
  • Camberwell Sports Ground
  • Balwyn Park and Balwyn Community Centre.

New equipment is due to open to the public on Saturday 8 October at Victoria Park Regional Playground, and four more locations are due to be ready for use at the end of the year.
