The 2025 Boroondara Urban Design Awards celebrated the best in urban design across the municipality, recognising projects that enhance the built environment and contribute to a more sustainable and liveable Boroondara.
Award categories
Projects were recognised across several categories:
- Student
- Civic or Commercial
- Residential: Including multi-dwelling or townhouse, alteration or addition, and single dwelling.
Each submission was required to:
- Address the design principles outlined in the Boroondara Design Excellence Guide.
- Demonstrate a clear response to sustainability considerations.
Judging panel
An independent panel of experts assessed the entries, including:
- Liam Wallis – Founder and Managing Director of HIP V. HYPE, member of Landcom Design Review Panel and Property Council of Australia VIC: Sustainability Committee.
- Markus Jung - Course Director of the Masters of Architecture and Urban Design at Swinburne University of Technology and co-director of XPACE architecture + urban design.
- Katherine Sundermann – Principal at MGS Architects, Senior Lecturer of Urban Planning and Design at Monash University and Co-President of Urban Design Forum Australia.
- Student Category – Judged by Boroondara Urban Design Awards Committee Councillors.
Award Ceremony event
Finalists and winners were announced at a celebratory event in August 2025 at the Hawthorn Arts Centre.
We were honoured to have Jill Garner, the Victorian Government Architect, deliver the keynote speech, sharing her insights on the role of design in shaping resilient and inspiring communities.
Winners
- Student: Camberwell Central presented to Sara Ballah and Caitlin Grimmet from Swinburne University of Technology.
- Civic or Commercial: Strathcona Early Years Campus presented to Strathcona Girls Grammar.
- Residential Multi-Dwelling or Townhouse: Compose presented to Jackson Clements Burrows.
- Residential Alteration or Addition: Connected House presented to Albert Mo Architects (AmoA).
- Residential Single Dwelling: Courtyard Garden House presented to Delia Teschendorff Architecture.
