We accept a maximum of 10 L of waste paint, either wet or dry. We partner with Paintback to dispose of your paint waste safely.
Barbecue gas bottles
We accept barbecue gas bottles (max 9 kg) for recycling from Boroondara residents and businesses.
You will need to show photo ID with a Boroondara address listed or photo ID with a matching name on a Boroondara rates notice as proof of residency or local trading when you drop off the bottles.
Expanded polystyrene
We accept one car boot load (half a cubic metre) of expanded polystyrene for free from Boroondara residents and businesses. You will need to show photo ID with a Boroondara address listed or photo ID with a matching name on a Boroondara rates notice as proof of residency or local trading when you drop off the polystyrene.
We don't accept payment to drop off more than one car boot load of expanded polystyrene.
We only accept clean, white, expanded polystyrene foam packaging. We don't accept coloured polystyrene, noodles, beans (from bean bags) or other flexible foam packaging that's not polystyrene.
Businesses with more than one boot load (half a cubic metre) of expanded polystyrene must organise a commercial polystyrene collection from their business, instead. Details of alternative recycling services are available from the national industry body, on the Expanded Polystyrene Australia website.
X-rays
We accept x-rays in our x-ray collection bank.
Hazardous and chemical waste
As a permanent Detox your Home drop-off site, we accept these items:
- fluorescent tubes, globes and compact fluorescent lamps
- car and household batteries
- motor oil (max 20L in disposable container)
- cooking oil (max 20L in disposable container)
- gas bottles (maximum 9kg) - residents only
There are annual Detox Your Home collections available for a broader range of household chemicals. These events are licensed to accept toxic chemicals and staffed by trained specialist chemists.
For a full list of what is accepted plus locations and dates, see Dispose of toxic household items (Detox Your Home). You don't need to live in the area where the event is held.
Warning: It's dangerous to put chemicals and hazardous materials in your rubbish bin. They can explode, catch fire, leak or mix with other chemicals in your bin, in the collection truck or at the sorting facility.
Pouring them down the drain can pollute the environment, harm animals and plants, contaminate our water supply and make rivers and beaches unsafe for swimming.
Electronic waste (e-waste)
E-waste is anything with a plug, battery, cord or alternative power supply, such as toasters, computers, TVs, heaters and hairdryers.
We accept all small to medium e-waste for recycling except solar panels, liquid filled heaters and massage chairs. Please note:
- items must be loose
- no packaging allowed
- large items such as whitegoods incur a fee (see fees below).
We partner with TechCollect to recycle residential e-waste.
We accept mobile phones and accessories as part of the MobileMuster program, which has drop-off locations throughout Boroondara.
For more information, visit our E-waste page.
Soft plastic
We are temporarily accepting soft plastics for recycling from Boroondara residents. You will need to provide photo identification with a Boroondara address listed or photo identification with a matching name on a Boroondara rates notice as proof of residency.
Visit our Temporary soft plastic recycling service page to find out more, including what we can and can't accept at our collection points.
