Lost animals

The RSPCA at 3 Burwood Highway, Burwood East, is Boroondara's pound. If an animal doesn't have identification and is found by a Council officer, it will be taken to the RSPCA.

Lost animals are held for 8 days.

If you have lost your pet, fill out a Lost Pet report on RSPCA website and call the RSPCA on 9224 2222.

If your pet is taken to the RSPCA they may scan your pet's microchip to try to identify the owner. Contact Central Animal Records microchip database to ensure your contact information is current.

To reclaim your lost pet from the RSPCA you must pay a release fee.

If your pet is unregistered, you must register your pet before you can take it home. You may be fined by Council for not containing your pet.

Visit the Burwood RSPCA and these local shelters in person to see if your pet has been handed in:

  • Local vets
  • Lost Dogs Home, North Melbourne
  • Lort Smith Animal Hospital, North Melbourne
  • Cat Protection Society, Greensborough
  • Burwood Road Cat Clinic, Hawthorn
  • Stonnington Pound, Glen Iris.

Found animals

It is against the law to keep an animal that you find.

If you find a pet and it does not have an identification tag with a phone number, you can:

  • call us on 9278 4444 (24 hours a day) to organise the animal to be collected. One of our officers will collect the animal if it's contained (for example, in a cat carrier or on a lead).
  • Take the animal to the RSPCA at 3 Burwood Highway, Burwood East.

Visit our Animal welfare page for advice on what to do if you find injured wildlife.

Visit our Cats page if you are having problems with a neighbourhood cat.

Agriculture Victoria has handy information on everything from how to prevent a dog attack to building an enclosure for your cat.

Deceased animals

We arrange for the removal of deceased animals from council-managed land including roads, footpaths and nature strips.

We aim to remove domestic animals within 24 hours and wild animals within 2 business days.

Removal of deceased animals happens after hours: between 4:00 pm and 8:00 am on weekdays and between 12:00 am to 12:00 pm on weekends.

Deceased, unidentified domestic animals are taken to the RSPCA to scan for a microchip so we can notify their owner.

We do not remove:

  • Dead possums from powerlines (this is the responsibility of the relevant power company).
  • Dead animals on arterial roads (it is VicRoads' responsibility).
  • Dead animals from private property. Residents must arrange this themselves.
