Benefits of membership

Membership allows you to borrow items and use facilities at our libraries, with free access to extensive online resources.

As a member you can:

  • borrow items from any of our libraries
  • access books, eBooks, large print books and books in other languages
  • sign up for free online music, newspapers and learning courses
  • hire a room for a meeting or study
  • use a computer for up to 2 hours
  • research local or family history
  • access free wi-fi in the libraries.

How to join

Join online

Join the library

  1. Read the terms and conditions and click ‘I accept’
  2. You'll receive a temporary membership number and PIN
  3. Come to one of our libraries and show formal identification* and proof of your current residential address to pick up your membership card.

Join in person

You can join in person at any of our libraries with formal identification* and proof of your current residential address. You don’t have to live in the City of Boroondara, but you do need to have a Victorian residential address.

Children under 18 need a parent or legal guardian to sign their membership card.

Temporary visitors to the area may join for a limited period by following one of the options above.

*Formal identification

The Boroondara Library Service accepts the following forms of identification (physical card or document required):

  • driver's licence (or certified copy of driver's licence)
  • car registration
  • proof of age card
  • Council rate notice
  • formal rental agreement
  • Health Benefits card (or certified copy of Health Benefits card)
  • Department of Social Security card (or certified copy of Social Security card)
  • bank or credit card statement
  • gas, water, phone or electricity bill
  • any formal letter from a federal, state or local government authority
  • any formal letter from an educational institution such as TAFE or university
  • payslip.

Acceptable forms of digital identification are:
