If you're finding it hard to shop, cook or prepare your own meals, you might be eligible for some help to prepare healthy meals at home.

Boroondara Cooks meal delivery program

Boroondara Cooks is a meal sharing and community strengthening program.

The program connects you with a volunteer cook who lives nearby and is happy to regularly share a portion of their home-cooked meals with you.

Access the program

If you would like to access this program and be connected with a local Boroondara cook, you can apply by emailing [email protected] or calling us on (03) 9278 4777. This program is free to join.

If you are approved for the program we will work with you to find out a little more about you, your food preferences, dietary requirements and any other relevant information. This information will help us to match you with a suitable local volunteer cook, with similar interests and food preferences.

Once we have connected you with your cook, they will regularly deliver a portion of their cooking to you and say hello.

Become a local volunteer cook

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer cook, please visit our Boroondara Cooks page.

Other food service resources

Meals at a community centre

Some seniors groups and centres offer community lunches, which you can find out about on our Activities for over 55s page.

Some organisations also offer their own transport services to help you get to and from these events. We can also provide local transport to a community centre with our community buses or volunteer transport. You can find out more about these options on our Help getting around page.

Delivered meals

Also known as 'Meals on wheels', this convenient and flexible service delivers meals to your door on weekdays, including meals for the weekend. These services have an extensive range of fresh, ready-to-eat main options to choose from, as well as sandwiches, salads, and soups.

In Boroondara these services are provided by BassCare and Samarinda. You can access these services through My Aged Care. You can apply for an assessment with My Aged Care by calling 1800 200 422, or you can learn more about the services available and the fees on the My Aged Care website.

Shopping online

If you need to do your shopping without leaving your home, you can also order your groceries online and have them delivered. The major grocery chains all offer this service as do some smaller providers.

We have resources available to help you improve your confidence with computers and ask your questions. You can find out more about these on our Add technology to your years page.

Cooking inspiration

If you like to cook and are looking for inspiration, we have a great range of cooking books and magazines available to borrow online.

With your Boroondara Library Service membership you can borrow eBooks and digital magazines for free, including many cooking and recipe items. You can find out more on our eBooks and audiobooks page, or our Newspapers and magazines page.
