The City of Boroondara, in partnership with Wurundjeri Council, is proud to officially open the Wurundjeri Heritage Trail during NAIDOC Week 2017.

Situated within peaceful Chandler Park and running along the iconic Yarra River, the Wurundjeri Heritage Trail is the result of an ongoing partnership between the two organisations.

The trail provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the language, culture and contemporary aspirations of the Wurundjeri community.

“We have worked closely with Wurundjeri Council to create a beautiful space that highlights the rich Wurundjeri history and culture of the area,” Councillor Phillip Healey, Mayor of Boroondara said.

“To have this trail running alongside the Yarra River, or Birrarung as it’s called by the Wurundjeri people, is significant. Historically, the river has been an important place for the Wurundjeri people as both a meeting place and an area rich in local resources. The Wurundjeri Heritage Trail is a celebration of this.”

Chandler Park is a critical flora and fauna corridor of the Middle Yarra River and, along with Yarra Bend Park and other Yarra River open space frontages, represents one of Boroondara's most significant natural heritage assets.

Wurundjeri Elders and Wurundjeri Council staff assisted the City of Boroondara with the creation of the Wurundjeri Heritage Trail, as well as the design and placement of the trail’s signage. The signs feature Wurundjeri artwork, photographs, stories and historical information.

The official opening of the trail is Tuesday 4 July 2017 during NAIDOC Week 2017, a time for celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This booked-out event will include a traditional smoking ceremony performed by a Wurundjeri Elder, education about Wurundjeri language and culture, planting, children’s activities, short guided walks and light refreshments.
