The silver screen is a fantastic medium for storytelling, and the capacity crowds we welcomed to the past 2 Boroondara Seniors Film Festivals was clear evidence of this.

This year, the film festival formed part of a wider month-long lineup of activities supporting the Victorian Seniors Festival.

Film Festival

The theme of this year’s film festival program ws 'Stories that inspire, challenge, and connect us'. Each film was elected to illustrate the wide spectrum of experience, stories and wisdom that only come with age.

Demand for the Boroondara Seniors Film Festival was high again this year and all cinema screenings were fully booked, with over 1200 people attending film screenings across our 3 local Boroondara cinemas: Lido Cinemas, Palace Balwyn and Village Rivoli.

Screenings included:

  • The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry at the Palace Balwyn Cinemas
  • Sweet Bean at the Palace Balwyn Cinemas
  • The King Sun: John Olsen, a portrait at 85 at the Lido Cinemas 
  • Sweet Bean at the Lido Cinemas
  • Mrs Harris Goes to Paris at the Village Cinema Rivoli
  • The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry at the Village Cinema Rivoli.

Short films

This year’s big-screen events also featured a selection of hand-picked local and international short films, made by or featuring older adults.

We had a fantastic response with over 220 film submissions received. Some of these films were screened at the cinema events and a larger range were available for a limited time on City of Boroondara's YouTube Channel.

Victorian Seniors Festival and events in Boroondara

The Victorian Seniors Festival took place in October, with events happening across the state. Here in Boroondara, there was lots on for older adults to enjoy as part of recognising and celebrating our local seniors.

Open day events and ‘Come and Try’ sessions were organised by seniors clubs, sports clubs and community centres throughout Boroondara.
