Do you have hazardous household chemicals like weed killer, pesticides, pool chemicals or bleach that you no longer use but don’t know how to get rid of safely?
Dispose of them for free at Sustainability Victoria’s Detox Your Home event co-hosted by Council, on Saturday 8 November between 9 am and 2 pm. The event will be drive-through and contactless, held at the Boroondara Recycling and Waste Centre in Camberwell.
Why should household chemicals be disposed of safely?
Pouring household chemicals down the drain or placing them in the bin can harm the environment and cause risks to others, including:
- polluting our waterways
- harming animals and vegetation
- contaminating our water supply
- making rivers and beaches unsafe for swimming
- chemicals may explode or catch fire in your bin, in a truck or at a sorting facility.
Detox Your Home events are a free and convenient service for Victorian householders to safely dispose of unwanted and toxic chemicals.
Common chemicals collected include:
- Cleaning: Acids and alkalis, including bleach, rust remover, and hydrochloric acid, oven cleaner.
- Garden: Fertiliser, fuel (old lawn mower/power tools fuel), weed killers/herbicides, insect sprays and pesticides, pool chemicals.
- Garage: Brake fluid, coolant, fuels including petrol, diesel and kerosene, machine oil and lubricant.
For the full list of chemicals accepted, visit Sustainability Victoria.
Detox Your Home no longer collects fire extinguishers, cosmetics, empty aerosols and oils, including cooking oil. For safety reasons we can’t accept containers of more than 20 litres or 20 kilograms. Please bring items in original packaging or a disposable container that will not be returned to you.
