Smoking and vaping

You should consider the health and safety implications of smoking and vaping at events, particularly in public spaces and around vulnerable populations.

• Establish clearly marked smoking areas away from high-traffic areas, food vendors and entrances. Make these areas comfortable, properly ventilated and with appropriate disposal facilities for cigarette butts and other waste.
• Designate smoke-free zones in areas such as children’s zones, medical tents, food stalls and seating areas. Include signage clearly indicating non-smoking and vaping areas to protect non-smokers.
• Designate specific areas for vaping and isolate these from the public and those who may be affected by vapour. Note that while vaping may not have the same direct health concerns as smoking, it can still pose risks to vulnerable populations (such as asthma sufferers).
• Make the Smoking/Vaping policy clear through prominent signs around the event. Communicate the policy in pre-event communications (for example on the website, emails) and during the event (for example via event staff, PA announcements).
• Organise staff or volunteers to monitor smoking and vaping areas and enforce the designated smoking policies. Consider including these requirements in your code of conduct for vendors, staff and attendees.
