About the Roseberry Street Heritage Assessment

In July 2021, some of our community members lodged a nomination with Council to include Roseberry Street, Hawthorn East in the Heritage Overlay. We referred the community nomination and associated background information to Council’s heritage consultant, Context, for assessment.

Following an extensive review process, Council’s heritage expert concluded that an extension of the Brickfields Environs Precinct to include properties on Roseberry Street in the Heritage Overlay could be facilitated through a revision of existing Brickfields Environs Precinct heritage citation.

On 5 October 2022, the UPDC considered the draft revised Brickfields Environs Precinct citation and officer recommendations, resolving to proceed with including an extension of the Heritage Overlay into Roseberry Street, and to undertake preliminary consultation.

Current Status (November 2022)

Preliminary consultation - have your say

Our heritage consultant has prepared a draft revised citation for the Brickfields Environs Precinct, expanded to include properties on Roseberry Street.

We are now seeking feedback on the updated Brickfields Environs Precinct heritage citation and the proposed Roseberry Street extension.

Please note: any feedback on the proposal must be made in writing by Friday 16 December 2022.

Next steps

Once the preliminary consultation process is complete, Council officers will review any feedback received and prepare a report for consideration by the Urban Planning Delegated Committee (UPDC).

The UPDC will decide whether to:

  • Adopt the revised heritage citation with or without changes as a result of any feedback received and/or recommended by Council officers.
  • Commence the formal planning scheme amendment process to introduce the Heritage Overlay to the Roseberry Street properties.
  • Defer adoption of the citation and commencement of the amendment until further work is undertaken.
  • Abandon the proposal.

The report is likely to be considered by the UPDC in the first half of 2023.

Affected and adjoining property owners/occupiers and anyone who provided Council with feedback as part of the preliminary consultation process will have the opportunity to address the UPDC in support of their feedback.
