Boroondara’s Heritage Action Plan 2016 guided how we identify, protect, manage and promote heritage places in Boroondara.
It included 4 themes:

  • Knowing - how we identify, assess and document heritage places.
  • Protecting - how we develop policies and local laws to protect and manage heritage places.
  • Supporting - how we provide help and advice to organisations and the community on heritage matters.
  • Communicating and promoting - how we raise awareness about the heritage of an area.

The Plan included a total of 10 very high and high priority actions which involved our municipal wide heritage gap studies.

In 2022, with the completion of the Glen Iris Heritage Gap Study, the last of the municipal wide heritage gap studies, we had delivered all 10 priority actions of the Plan. To read the studies visit our Completed heritage studies page.

In 2023, we reviewed the Plan (refer Heritage Action Plan Review Report 2023) and found that most actions were completed or commenced.
Our review of the Plan also identified the opportunity for a new council-wide heritage strategy. This new strategy will continue to guide how we identify and protect heritage and will also provide direction on how we promote and celebrate Boroondara’s heritage. The new strategy will also include ongoing actions carried over from the Plan.

On 18 September 2023, the Heritage Action Plan 2016 was concluded with the Urban Planning Delegated Committee’s (UPDC) endorsement of the Heritage Action Plan Review Report 2023.

The UPDC also resolved to prepare a new Boroondara Heritage Strategy to steer our heritage program over the next 10 years. The new heritage strategy will be based on Heritage Victoria’s ‘Municipal Heritage Strategies: a guide for Councils’.

We are currently preparing Boroondara’s new Heritage Strategy.
