Our volunteer transport program helps older residents without access to a vehicle get to and from their medical appointments.

This program is ideal for volunteers who enjoy driving and meeting new people. Our volunteer drivers tell us they feel more connected to their community and are proud to be part of such a valuable program for Boroondara residents.

How to become a volunteer driver

We are looking for volunteers who have at least one weekday free each week or fortnight to drive residents to and from medical appointments. Drivers can use their own vehicle, or sometimes we can provide a City of Boroondara car for you to drive.

Express your interest

After you submit the expression of interest form, our program coordinator will contact you over the next couple of weeks. They’ll guide you through the registration process.

Driver requirements

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • are available one weekday each week or fortnight
  • can commit to at least 6 months with the program
  • are at least 25 years old, due to car insurance requirements
  • can provide a copy of their current drivers licence and comprehensive car insurance policy if they are using their own vehicle
  • complete the online National Police Check for the Community Transport Program.

If you are invited to join the program, the coordinator will arrange a time to complete induction paperwork with you in-person. This will include signing our volunteer agreement.

How it works

You’ll be given a roster the week before each volunteer shift. The roster tells you:

  • who you are rostered to drive
  • the passenger/s address details
  • any other relevant information about your passengers.

Depending on the needs for the week, you might be driving one passenger or up to 3 passengers to and from their appointments across the day.

You’ll collect each passenger from their home and drop them off at their appointment. You’ll then stay to drive them home again. We’ll give you information about parking near each clinic, hospital or medical facility you visit.

Generally, you’ll wait for the passenger in the car while they go to their appointment. If your passenger has limited mobility, you might walk them into their appointment.
