There are 3 types of kindergarten to consider, depending on your family and your circumstances. All of these are available in Boroondara.

Stand-alone kindergarten

These are kindergarten programs taught in purpose-built centres during set hours and days.

These are known as 'sessional' or 'stand-alone' kindergartens.

Sessions are usually shorter than a business day and run for 2 to 4 days per week.

Many of these kindergartens are managed by volunteer parent committees.

Kindergarten in long day care

Long day care centres offer childcare for children from 0 to 6 years old. Most also offer kindergarten programs taught by Early Childhood teachers that children can attend as part of their time at long day care.

Hours of care vary across centres but most offer 40 hours per week.

If your child attends both a sessional kindergarten and a long day care centre, the Victorian Government will only provide kindergarten funding for one. You should discuss this with the long day care centre when you enrol your child.

Kindergarten in an independent school

Some independent schools offer 'K-12', meaning they provide schooling from kindergarten through to year 12. These schools sometimes refer to their kindergartens as Early Learning Centres or ELCs.

Kindergartens in Boroondara

Suburbs in Boroondara offer kindergartens in each of these categories.

We (Council) manage the application process for most stand-alone kindergartens in Boroondara, but not for those in long day care or independent schools.

Most kindergartens welcome enquiries throughout the year and you can contact them directly to arrange a time to visit.
