Additional year of funded kindergarten

Additional year of funded 3-year old or 4-year old kindergarten

From 2026 children can apply to access an additional year of either:

• Three-year-old Kindergarten
• Pre-Prep (or Four-year-old Kindergarten for children not eligible for Pre-Prep).

Therefore eligible children can access up to 3 years of funded kindergarten or Pre-Prep in Victoria.

An additional kindergarten year may be recommended for children with additional needs or developmental delays.

If you have concerns about your child's readiness for school, speak to their kindergarten teacher. With your permission, the teacher will complete an assessment and potentially reach out to the Preschool Field Officer to discuss.

If the teacher thinks an additional year of kindergarten is right for your child, they will contact the Department of Education and also advise Central Registrations. 

The teacher needs to declare that your child is eligible to receive an additional year of funding and a new registration will need to be submitted.

Please note: thinking a child is 'young for their age' does not guarantee funding for an additional year of kindergarten.
