To apply for a place in a kindergarten that is a member of the Boroondara Kindergarten Central Enrolment Scheme (BKCES) follow this 3-step process.
- Choose up to 5 preferred member kindergartens.
- Complete the central enrolment application online.
- Receive and confirm your offer.
Note: We ask you to nominate 5 preferences because we may not be able to place your child in your first choice kindergarten program. Generally all 4-year-old children will be offered a kindergarten place by the end of the allocation process.
When to apply
You can apply for a kindergarten place anytime after your child turns 2.
Apart from late applications, the date you apply is not considered by us when we allocate places, so children with birthdays later in the year are not disadvantaged.
Applications close at the end of term 2 in the year before your child starts. This is usually the last week of June. See school dates in Victoria.
Applications for kindergarten are accepted year round. Applications for the following year made after the central enrolment closing date may be placed on kindergarten waiting lists. The full selection criteria does not apply for late applications.
Applications meeting high priority criteria submitted after the closing date are considered on a case by case basis.

If this is the first time you've applied for a member kindergarten place in Boroondara, you will need to register your details with us. That way we can keep you up to date with your application progress and you can manage your application online.
Due to COVID-19 enrolment fees are currently waived ($0).
When you submit your application you need to pay a non-refundable fee unless you qualify for the kindergarten fee subsidy, then you pay the concession ($0).
- $26.75 ($0 concession) for 3-year-old or 4-year-old kindergarten place
- $53.50 ($0 concession) for 3-year-old and 4-year-old kindergarten place.
When you have submitted your application you will receive an acknowledgement email with a confirmation letter attached.
By late July, you'll receive an email with either a kindergarten offer or your child's position on the waiting list.
Further offers are made as positions become available until all kindergarten places are allocated.
You will need to:
- Log in to your central enrolment account and confirm your acceptance of the offer before the due date.
The kindergarten will contact you about fees and commencement dates.
- Pay a deposit to the kindergarten to secure your child's place. Some kindergartens don't require this.
Note: If you have an eligible concession card you will need to show this to the kindergarten to claim the reduced fee.
Making changes to your application
Change your preferences
You can update your preferences after you submit your application by logging in to your central enrolment account.
Changing preferences must be completed by the end of term 2 in the year before your child starts kindergarten, or your application may be placed on the waiting list.
Change your contact details
If we can't contact you using the details you provide, we may withdraw your application.
Your application may be given a higher priority if your family has circumstances such as disability or illness. You can apply for 'special consideration' when you submit your enrolment application online. You will need to provide supporting documentation from a medical practitioner, health care worker or specialist.
Applications for 'special consideration' are assessed by our Family, Youth and Recreation Department.
