COVID-19: some of our facilities have reopened. You must be fully vaccinated to enter.

When to apply

You can apply for a kindergarten place anytime after your child turns 2.

To ensure children born later in the year will not be disadvantaged, the date you apply does not affect how we allocate places. Applications received after the closing date are an exception to this.

Applications close at the end of term 2 in the year before your child starts. This is usually the last week of June. See school dates in Victoria.

When to start kindergarten

If you are enrolling your child in 2 years of kindergarten before starting school, your child must be 3 years of age on or before 30 April to attend 3-year-old kindergarten in that year. Most kindergartens will require your child to be 3 years of age before they start attending kindergarten.

If you choose to only enrol your child in 4-year-old kindergarten, it is best that they attend the year before they start school.

Some children have a choice about what year to start kindergarten. Read our when to start kindergarten information to assist your decision.

How to apply

Choose your preferred kindergarten

In your online application, you can nominate up to 5 preferences. You need to supply preferences for both the kindergarten and the specific sessions you want to attend.

  • Find a kindergarten in Boroondara to suit you using our searchable map.
  • You can find details for central enrolment kindergartens on our website, including their session times, fees, facilities, programs, policies and options for extended care. Make a note of your selections.
  • Arrange a time to visit the kindergarten or attend their open day.

Note: We ask you to nominate 5 preferences because we may not be able to place your child in your first choice kindergarten program. Generally all children will be offered a kindergarten place by the end of the allocation process.

Complete the central enrolment application online
