Victoria’s first electricity pole-mounted EV chargers are delivering 100% renewable power to electric vehicles in Boroondara.
Pole-mounted EV chargers are easier and faster to install as they do not require expensive civil engineering works, and plentiful power is available just a few metres overhead.
The two pilot chargers are located near the Ashburton Pool & Recreation Centre and on Ashburton’s High Street and can charge two vehicles at a time for up to 22kW per vehicle.
The two pilot chargers installed in Ashburton have proven popular with local residents and visitors, making charging easier and more accessible for residents and businesses.
Mayor Sophie Torney from the City of Boroondara said the chargers were a game changer for EV owners.
“Boroondara ranks as one of the top local government areas for EVs in Victoria and we’re focused on playing our part making electric transport accessible to all.
“I’m excited about Council’s partnership with EVX to roll out the first two on-pole chargers in Victoria as these are a game-changer for residents who can’t add an EV charger to their property”.
“If we’re serious about getting more EVs on the road, we have to make charging possible where people actually live. For apartment dwellers and renters, pole chargers aren’t a luxury, they’re the missing link and will become a common sight on streets across Melbourne in the years to come. I’m proud Boroondara is leading the way!”
A number of other local councils are hoping to install pole-mounted chargers of their own by the end of this year, with Boroondara the first to successfully roll out the technology.
The two-year agreement with EVX covers an initial two sites in Ashburton, with works in progress to explore an expansion to new sites across Boroondara.
