We’re working to expand and connect our Greenways network of walking and cycling paths, making it easier and safer to move around off-road.
With $3 million already committed this financial year, we're creating a new Greenways Plan while continuing work on already identified new path links and making existing paths safer and more accessible.
A new Greenways Plan is being developed to help us improve connections between neighbourhoods, parks, schools and key destinations across our suburbs. This plan will guide us to make it easier and safer for our residents to move around, stay active, drive less and enjoy their local environment through our network of paths.
The plan will also improve biodiversity along our Greenways network as we add more trees and plants to improve and create new wildlife corridors and habitats.

On Tuesday 21 October councillors and community members gathered at Ferndale Park in Glen Iris alongside a recently upgraded path link to celebrate council’s investment in an expanded and connected network. Through the Greenways Plan, this section of path will one day connect all the way from Ashburton to Kew as a single, connected shared path.
Glen Iris Primary School students were on hand to help the Mayor, Cr Sophie Torney, and Gardiner ward Cr Victor Franco plant new trees beside the upgraded path to kickstart revegetation of the area.
In November, our biodiversity team will start preparing to revegetate about 6,000 square metres alongside this section of pathway. Over the next 3 years, around 20,000 tube-stock plants will be added to create layered vegetation that will support native wildlife, particularly small birds which need dense shrubs to thrive.
The Greenways Plan is about more than just the infrastructure – it’s about shaping a greener, more resilient and connected city. We’re committed to supporting sustainable transport, healthier lifestyles and stronger community connections and the Greenways Plan will help us achieve just that.
