Have coffee with local police, take a road safety refresher or come to our Emergency Services Family Fun Day this October.
Community Safety Month is a reminder to keep safety in mind – in our neighbourhoods and online.
Inspector Sandy McIver is Local Area Commander for the Boroondara Police Service Area. She says police officers from Boroondara and Camberwell police stations are committed to connecting with the local community.
‘Hearing about safety concerns is important so we can provide information, assurance and determine how we can better target our resources in the areas of need,’ she says.
Victoria Police hosted the Neighbourhood Policing Forum in Boroondara in August, where community members talked with police about local issues. Officers and Neighbourhood Watch volunteers will continue these conversations at Community Safety Month events.
Inspector McIver says simple steps can deter criminals from opportunistic crimes such as burglaries and theft from vehicles.
Police security tips
- Lock all home access points including internal and external garage doors, windows, gates, sheds, pet doors and skylights.
- Don’t hide spare keys outside your home or leave keys in window locks.
- Leave out a dog bowl or lead, even if you don’t have a dog.
- If someone knocks on the door, make a noise to show you’re inside.
- Don’t leave valuables in your car.
- Lock your vehicle, even when parking at home. Lock external toolboxes and equipment.
