Last month, we invited young people who live or study in Boroondara to help share an important message with our community via our design our new waste trucks competition: e-waste doesn’t belong in our bins.
Thank you to the 62 young people who submitted their entries. We received a wide range of entries from right across Boroondara, with entrants ranging from 4 to 14 years. We loved the creativity shown that demonstrated how to safely dispose of e-waste and support cleaner, safer recycling for everyone.
We’re pleased to announce the winning design was created by Harriet, aged 10, from Solway Primary School. The judges congratulate Harriet for this colourful design that clearly brings to life the e-waste message.
Starting this spring, we’ll be bringing the winning design to life as large-scale artwork on 4 of our waste collection trucks. Harriet’s artwork will travel through neighbourhoods across Boroondara for years to come reminding people to dispose of e-waste responsibly.
Please see below some examples of the wonderful and creative entries we received during the competition, including Harriet's artwork.
E-waste includes any item with a battery, plug or power cord that is no longer working. It includes everyday items such as old batteries, phones, chargers and other electronics. For more examples of e-waste visit the Clean Up Australia website.
When e-waste is placed in bins, it can start dangerous fires when it is compacted in our collection trucks which puts our drivers at risk. When this happens, the entire load must be removed to put the fire out. If it’s a recycling or FOGO truck, the material collected can’t be recycled or repurposed and must go to landfill.
You can drop-off e-waste at designated e-waste recycling points or book a hard waste collection. Items are then sorted and recycled safely so valuable materials can be recovered and harmful components are kept out of landfill.
