Bring your nature strip back to nature

Keen for a spring gardening project? Look no further than your nature strip!

Replacing a traditional grass nature strip with native grasses, groundcovers and shrubs can make a beautiful and biodiverse ‘stepping stone’ for local plants and wildlife.

It will also create a mini ‘sponge city’ that soaks up rainwater where it falls, reducing pooling, easing pressure on drains and keeping streets cooler.

And you won’t need to mow it any more!

How to make a biodiverse nature strip

• First up, check out our list of recommended native plants for inspiration. Take a wander around your neighbourhood to see what others have done.
• Read our Nature Strip Planting Guidelines and apply for a permit.
• Before you start, contact Before You Dig Australia to locate and avoid any underground services like gas, power, water and telecommunications.
• Remove any existing grass or weeds on the nature strip.
• Lay any stepping-stone pavers – you can have up to 4 non-slip pavers to guide pedestrians through the strip.
• Get your chosen plants in the ground, leaving a 50 cm clearance along the kerb for bin collection and pedestrian access. 
• Mulch generously and enjoy!
