About JJ McMahon Memorial Kindergarten

JJ McMahon is a kindergarten with a strong sense of community, where families and children of all cultures, backgrounds and abilities are welcomed and included in all aspects of the program. Families play an important role in the care and education of your children, and staff believe in the importance of an equal partnership. 

The children are viewed as capable and competent learners, their voices are valued and their input into the planning and programming is evident as the environment reflects their interests and needs. All staff strongly believe that children are curious and learn through play, drawing on the philosophies of Reggio Emilia, Montessori and Froebel. This program offers 15 hours of free kinder per week plus 4 hours and 30 minutes of additional optional hours. Fees apply to the additional hours.

Red group

This program offers 15 hours of free kinder per week and 7 hours and 30 minutes of optional additional hours. Fees apply for the additional hours.

We’re making much-needed upgrades to Kew Library in 2026. The library is currently closed and is expected to reopen in early 2027. A temporary site is available at Kew Court House.

Temporary library at Kew Court House

The Kew Court House (KCH) is located at 188 High Street, Kew. It is a 7-minute walk from Kew Library.

Opening hours:

• Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.
• Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm.

The temporary library lets you continue to use library services during the upgrade. You can:

• browse a limited collection
• borrow items
• return items during, and after hours
• collect reservations
• take part in community programs.

Our public ride sessions are designed for casual ‘play and ride’ so your child can experience Kew Traffic School without being part of a school or kindergarten group. There is no Safety Education Program included in the session.

Term 1 public rides

Sessions will be available for ages 6 and under every Wednesday and Friday during the term.

• 9 to 10:30 am
• 11 am to 12:30 pm.

About public ride sessions

The cost is $11 per child riding on the track for each session.

• Bookings must be made for all children wishing to ride or scoot on the track.
• Individual bookings are limited to 6 children.
• Places for each session are capped for safety reasons.
• Children must bring their own bicycle or scooter and helmet (e-bikes, e-scooters, roller skates and skateboards are not permitted).
• Parents and carers must stay and supervise their children.
• Bring your own drinks and snacks.
• Pets are not permitted on the Kew Traffic School premises.

It’s a requirement that all riders on the track wear a helmet at all times.

School holiday public ride sessions

This is a great school holiday activity for children up to 10 years of age.

Sessions are available for 2 age groups (6 years and under and all ages up to 10 years) on weekdays during school holidays, excluding public holidays. 

Please note that if you are booking a session for all ages up to 10 years, there will be children aged 10 on larger bikes who ride at faster speeds.

Privacy

Council is collecting your personal information to enable the booking of the Kew Traffic School for a private party of function. The personal information will be used by Council for that primary purpose or a reasonably related secondary purpose. The personal information collected will not otherwise be disclosed unless permitted or required by law. If the information is not collected, you will not be able to book the facility. Requests for access to and/or amendment of personal information should be made to Council’s Privacy Officer. See our Privacy page for more details. 

The Kew Traffic School is a popular venue for private parties and functions and is available for:

• one 2-hour session on weekday afternoons (or 3-hour session during daylight savings)
• four 2-hour sessions on Saturdays and Sundays.

Kew Traffic School opens bookings 6 months in advance on a daily basis and is often booked out on the day the bookings open. Only available booking slots will be shown.

The maximum number of children per private booking is either:

• 30 children (ages 2 to 10)
• 50 children (ages 6 and under).

It's important to note:

• Children need to bring their own bicycle or scooter and helmet (e-bikes, e-scooters, rollerskates and skateboards are not permitted).
• Carers or parents must stay and supervise their children.
• Guests can access the site during the designated booking times only.
• Hosts can access the site up to 15 minutes before booking times for set-up. If you require additional time for your party, consider booking a double session.
• It is a requirement that all riders on the track wear a helmet at all times.
• Pets are not permitted on Kew Traffic School premises.

You have exclusive use of the party room with:

• tables and chairs
• fridge/freezer
• microwave
• boiling water tap
• oven (no stove top).

Additional amenities include:

• a covered pergola with fixed table and bench seats
• barbecue
• toilets.

Book a private function

You can book a private function or log in to see your bookings via our booking portal. 

You can make a booking up to 6 months in advance. If you book within 7 days of the event, please contact us by phone to confirm your booking.

Before booking, check if your event date coincides with a public holiday, school holiday or other events. 

You should also read the Kew Traffic School Hire Agreement, which has information about safety, cancellations, insurance, conditions and more.

Note: Always check your junk/spam folder for any confirmation emails from us, especially if you have a hotmail email address.

Community group bookings

Community groups located in Boroondara can book the Kew Traffic School for fundraising events at a discounted rate of $154 for any session time.

Community groups must meet the following criteria:

• be located within the City of Boroondara
• be a not-for-profit, incorporated organisation
• be holding a fundraising event for the organisation.

Email us at [email protected] and provide a brief overview of the event. This should be on your community group's official letterhead and signed by a committee member.

Alexandra Gardens offer a picturesque setting and rotunda. This makes the gardens ideal for functions.

About the gardens

A fine example of a Federation landscape, the gardens feature expansive lawn areas surrounded by beautiful avenues of mature trees creating shady glades and pools of dappled sunlight.

Deep foliage and shrub borders surrounding the gardens offer brilliant splashes of seasonal colour. These magnificent gardens have a perennial border as a backdrop and a decorative rotunda overlooking the lily pond.

Named after Queen Alexandra, the gardens opened in 1908 and are designed in the formal style typical of the early 1900s.
