Clear, visible signage is critical for making an event that's safe, accessible and easy to navigate for all attendees, staff and contractors. 

Signage requirements

At a minimum, your event should include signage for:

  • Entry and exit points including public entrances, staff/crew access and emergency exits.
  • Emergency assembly areas clearly marked with the appropriate symbol and be visible from multiple directions.
  • Toilets with signs for accessible toilets and baby change facilities.
  • First Aid station with a cross symbol and directional signs where needed
  • Information point if your event has a central help or information hub.
  • Lost children
  • Food and drink areas
  • Licensed areas to show where alcohol is served or consumed. Also include signs for:
    • No BYO alcohol
    • Responsible Service of Alcohol
    • Age restrictions for entry (for example, 18+ areas).

Depending on your event’s nature and complexity, you may also need signs for:

  • Parking and transport: Shuttle bus locations, disabled parking, bike racks, ride share drop-offs.
  • No entry/Restricted access: For back-of-house, staff-only or dangerous areas.
  • Hazards or site safety warnings: Trip hazards, uneven ground, low clearance, fire bans and so on.
  • Public health signage: According to current Government health directives.
  • Waste and recycling: Clear labelling of general waste, recycling and compost bins.
  • Smoking/Vaping rules: Including ‘Smoke-free zone’ signs.

Design and placement tips

  • Use large, high-contrast fonts and symbols.
  • Position signs at eye level and in well-lit areas.
  • Include braille or tactile signage where required by accessibility standards.
  • Use multilingual signage or universal symbols for diverse audiences.
  • Ensure temporary signage is weatherproof and securely fastened.
  • Where possible, use signage that can be re-used for future events or recycled after use to reduce waste.

Some signage (for example, directional or promotional signs on roadsides or public spaces) may require our pre-approval. Talk to your Event Concierge.
