Environmental sustainability

Integrate sustainable practices into your event to minimise waste and resource consumption. 

Reducing the environmental impact of your event is a key part of planning. Refer to the Boroondara Climate Action Plan for guidance. This plan outlines our goals and strategies for sustainability including renewable energy, circular economy, water saving, biodiversity and resource use.

Strategies to reduce waste

• Ask attendees to bring their own reusable coffee cups, plates and cutlery to avoid disposables. Provide clear information in advance about your efforts.
• Eliminate disposal one-time-use items like condiment sachets, plastic-wrapped giveaways or coffee pods at your event.
• Install drinking fountains or hydration units to minimise bottled water use and encourage attendees to bring their own bottles.
• If using disposable cups, implement a system where cups or tokens can be returned or exchanged.
• Separate food waste from other bins so it can be composted instead of going to landfill.

Single-use plastic ban in Victoria

In line with Victoria’s regulations, single-use plastics are banned. This includes:

• plastic straws (except for those with disability or medical needs)
• plastic cutlery
• polystyrene food containers
• plastic plates and bowls
• plastic stirrers and cotton bud sticks.

Don't distribute or sell these items at your event or you may be fined.

Balloons

Balloons significantly contribute to environmental harm. They are non-biodegradable and can end up as litter in waterways and on land, posing a risk to wildlife. Avoid using balloons at your event. If you must, use only helium-free and biodegradable balloons. Adopt clear procedures for balloon disposal to minimise their environmental impact.

Waste sorting

• Set up clearly labelled bins for landfill, recycling and composting.
• Place bins in convenient, high-traffic locations (for example near food stalls, seating areas and exits).
• Clearly sign which bins are for different types of waste.
• Consider appointing bin attendants during peak periods to guide patrons on correct disposal and reduce contamination between waste streams.
• Partner with local green waste services to efficiently handle organic waste so that it's composted instead of going to landfill.
• Choose vendors who offer compostable or recyclable packaging to align with your sustainability goals.

Other sustainability tips

• Consider using LED lighting, solar-powered equipment and other energy-saving technologies to reduce your event's carbon footprint.
• For signs and decorations, choose materials that can be reused at future events to avoid waste.
• Avoid damaging grass, trees and water systems when you set up equipment.
• Return the site to its original or better condition after the event.
