As we start the new year, we have some important updates to share with pet owners around Boroondara.
You may have noticed our animal management team out and about in brand-new uniforms across our parks, playgrounds and trails. These highly trained officers keep our community safe and support responsible pet ownership.
Along with checking dog registrations and ensuring pets are on-leash where required, they respond to and investigate dog attacks. Our officers are trained in current animal management techniques, animal handling and investigations. They’re passionate about animals and are happy to provide advice to pet owners. If you’re approached in a park by our team, we appreciate your cooperation.
Late last year, councillors adopted a new Domestic Animal Management Plan to guide responsible pet ownership across Boroondara. It focuses on:
Read the plan in full at our Domestic Animal Management Plan page.
While developing the Domestic Animal Management Plan, we heard from many community members about the need to restrict the movement of roaming cats.
In response to this, we’ll soon run a community consultation to gauge feedback or support for a cat containment curfew. A report will go to Council about the issue and a decision’s expected by the end of July.
To be notified when the consultation opens so you can have your say, visit our Cat curfew page.
Please remember that all pets over 3 months of age must be registered with Council.
If your pet’s already registered, you’ll receive an annual renewal notice by post, with registrations due on 9 April. If you (or your pet!) are new to Boroondara, you can easily transfer your existing pet registration online.
Register or renew your pet at our Pets and animals page.
