We are one of 34 councils across Victoria calling on the Victorian Government to review the mandatory rollout of a costly 4th bin for glass recycling, and to expand the state’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) instead.
Expanding the CDS to accept wine and spirit bottles in line with other states could deliver the same recycling benefits at a fraction of the cost of an additional bin.In Boroondara, it is estimated the implementation of kerbside glass recycling would cost $6.5 million – with an annual ongoing service cost of approximately $2.2 million (based on an independent analysis in late 2024). In difficult economic times, our residents shouldn't be asked to carry this cost when a cheaper, proven alternative exists. We don’t need more bins, more confusion, more contamination, more trucks and more emissions in Boroondara. Our residents should be able to continue recycling glass in the co-mingled recycling bin they currently have.We believe there’s a better way to tackle glass recycling with an expanded CDS. Tell us what you think about kerbside glass recycling in Boroondara, so we can share your views with the Victorian Government. Share your feedback via our survey on Your Say before 5 pm on Monday 25 May.
