National Tree Day this year marks 30 years of Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event. To celebrate, we’ve got something extra special planned for our National Tree Day event at Ferndale Park on Sunday 26 July.
Join us from 10 am to 12 pm for a morning of getting your hands dirty and giving back to the community.
We’ll be planting mainly understorey plant species. Understorey plants include shrubs, grasses, ground covers and wildflowers that make up the layers under the tree canopy.
Planting out areas in our parks with different vegetation layers is really important to support biodiversity. Small birds are sadly declining in urban areas like Boroondara and adding new understorey species helps support their habitat. These birds require dense shrubs to forage, shelter and nest in.
Spots are limited so book ahead to avoid disappointment.
There will be a coffee truck onsite selling hot drinks and snacks. Everyone who registers to come and plant will receive a coffee voucher as a thank you for your contribution.
To find out more and book your spot, visit the event page.
If you can’t make our National Tree Day event, 2 of our local parks groups are also inviting community volunteers to join them at winter planting events.
They’ve prepared planting sites at Nettleton Park in Glen Iris and Greythorn Park in Balwyn North and we’ll be supplying the plants. All you need to do is register and then turn up ready to get your hands dirty!
Please see the individual event pages for further details and to register.
