Biketober is back! Give this fun and free bike-riding challenge a spin throughout October, whether you’re a seasoned rider or keen to get back on 2 wheels.

You can ride on your own, or team up with friends, family or colleagues. Schools can get involved too – with kids competing alongside their friends for a fun challenge.

Register to log your rides and earn points, climb the leaderboard, and go in the running to win prizes including a $4,000 holiday of your choice. Schools can win a $1,000 sports equipment voucher.

Every ride counts, whether it’s your daily commute to work or school, a quick coffee run, or a weekend adventure.

How far can you go this Biketober? Learn more and sign up at the Love to Ride website.

Spring into bike-riding season

Are you new to riding or just getting back in the saddle again? Try these tips to ease the way.

Dust off your bike

Before you ride, do a bike ABC check. Air: pump up the tyres. Brakes: check them. Chain: check it for rust and lubricate.

Start short

Try a few short neighbourhood rides to build confidence. Replacing a car trip to the shops is a sustainable option and parking’s no problem.

Stick to shared paths

Use shared paths to avoid vehicle traffic. Boroondara has 37 km of off-road shared paths. Find them on our TravelSmart maps – you can grab one from our libraries.

Plan your route

Use a TravelSmart map to avoid busy roads. If you’re riding to work or school, try out the route on a weekend to see how long it takes.

Alternate your commute

If your commute’s long, try alternating with public transport to ease you into the distance. Ride in the morning, and take a train or tram home. Then ride your bike home the next night.

Safety first

By law you must wear a helmet, and your bike must have a working bell or horn and at least one effective brake. If riding in the dark your bike needs a white light at the front, and a red light and red reflector at the back.
