Biketober is back! This free cycling challenge is open to everyone, from regular pedallers to beginners. Ride throughout October to earn points, win prizes and have fun along the way.
This year, you can also earn points and prize entries through ‘Rate my Routes’. Give valuable feedback on what it’s like to ride on local streets around Boroondara and help make our community better for biking.
You can take part in Biketober on your own or with your workplace community group. Every ride counts, whether it’s your daily commute, a quick shopping run or a weekend adventure.
Register to log your rides and earn points, climb the leaderboard, and go in the running to win prizes including a $4,000 holiday.
How far can you go this Biketober? Learn more and sign up at the Love to Ride website.
Are you new to riding or just getting back in the saddle again? Try these tips to ease the way.
Before you ride, do a bike ABC check. Air: pump up the tyres. Brakes: check them. Chain: check it for rust and lubricate.
Try a few short neighbourhood rides to build confidence. Replacing a car trip to the shops is a sustainable option and parking’s no problem.
Use shared paths to avoid vehicle traffic. Boroondara has 37 km of off-road shared paths. Find them on our TravelSmart maps – you can grab one from our libraries.
Use a TravelSmart map to avoid busy roads. If you’re riding to work or school, try out the route on a weekend to see how long it takes.
If your commute’s long, try alternating with public transport to ease you into the distance. Ride in the morning and take a train or tram home. Then ride your bike home the next night.
By law you must wear a helmet and your bike must have a working bell or horn and at least one effective brake. If riding in the dark, your bike needs a white light at the front and a red light and red reflector at the back.
