If you’re heading along to our Summer in the Park festival of events over the next 5 weeks, we’ve got some simple steps you can follow to help take care of our environment and reduce waste.

Whether you’re heading to one event or all 13, read our 5 top tips to do Summer in the Park sustainably.

Sustainable tips

Tip 1

Bring your reusable water bottle and top up at our water station to stay hydrated or use the drinking fountain available in each park.

Tip 2

Plan ahead and work out which transport option works best for you to get to the event:

• Walk or ride your bike. If you’re cycling, bike parking is available at all parks. For the Friday night events at the festival hub, find lots of bike parking a stone’s throw away outside Camberwell Library. If you’re heading to Jazz in the Park at Riversdale Park on 21 February, you can use the Outer Circle Railway Anniversary Trail to get there by bike or on foot.
• Catch public transport - Our main festival hub hosting 5 Friday night events in Camberwell, is close to tram stops and about a 10-minute walk from Camberwell train station.
• Carpool with friends or family.

Tip 3

Bring reusable picnic cutlery, plates and cups instead of single-use items where you can. If you’re a regular picnicker and you don’t have one yet, consider investing in a picnic hamper that has all the reusable items you’ll need for your future picnic pursuits too.

Tip 4

If you accidentally over-catered your picnic, take leftover food and food scraps home with you if you can:

• Any food items that are still ok to eat will give you an easy lunch or snack for the next day.
• Wrap up any food scraps and pop them in your FOGO bin when you get home. We turn the contents of your FOGO bin into compost to be used on farms, in parks and gardens, instead of going to landfill.

Tip 5

Enjoy a snack from the electric vehicle-powered sausage sizzle, run by community group Electrify Boroondara. They’ll be at the 5 festival hub events in Camberwell, every Friday night from 30 January through to 27 February. Have a chat to their friendly volunteers for inspiration about electric habits you can adopt in your own life too.

Summer in the Park’s solar stage

We’re also introducing a new sustainable initiative to Summer in the Park this year. All events at our festival hub at Camberwell Civic Precinct are performed on a fully solar-powered stage, thanks to sustainable production house WILDLIVE.
