Before you begin

Membership number and PIN

You'll need your membership number and PIN to access eBooks and audio books on any device.

Your 14-digit membership number is under the barcode on your library card.

Your 6-digit PIN is your date of birth in DDMMYY format.

If you're not a member, you can the join the library online. See our Membership page.

Access eBooks and audiobooks

Search for an eBook or audiobook on the Library catalogue website-external site, or start exploring on one of the platforms listed below.

Our eBooks and audiobooks can be accessed on a phone, tablet, PC or laptop, and they can be read on most e-readers.

See the instructions below for each platforms to learn how to access their eBooks and audiobooks.

Read an eBook in your web browser

  1. Go to the login page for the collection on the OverDrive website-external site or the BorrowBox website-external site, and log in using your membership number and PIN.
  2. Select and borrow an eBook.
  3. Select 'read now in browser' if you are using Overdrive, or 'read online'  if you are using BorrowBox.

Download an eBook to your laptop or PC

  1. Install Adobe Digital Editions from the Adobe website-external site onto your computer.
  2. Create an Adobe ID by filling in the Adobe account sign-up form-external site.
  3. Open Adobe Digital Editions and select 'Help, Authorize computer'. Select 'Adobe ID' from the drop-down menu and enter your Adobe ID and password.
  4. Now go to the login page for the collection on the OverDrive website-external site or the BorrowBox website-external site, and log in using your membership number and PIN.
  5. Follow the online prompts to download and open the eBook file.

Transfer an eBook to an e-reader

  1. Complete the steps in the 'Download an eBook to your laptop or PC' section above.
  2. Download an eBook to your computer.
  3. Attach your e-reader to the computer.
  4. Once your device name appears in the list on the left side of Adobe Digital Editions, drag your downloaded eBook onto the e-reader device name.
  5. Disconnect the e-reader and start reading.
Please note: our library eBooks and audiobooks are not compatible with Kindle e-readers.

Returning or renewing eBooks

If you borrow an eBook, you'll receive an email reminder before the end of your loan period.

Follow the instructions in the email to return or renew your items, or allow your access to automatically expire at the end of the loan.

eBook and audiobook platforms

OverDrive collection

Boroondara Library Service members can access approximately 20,000 titles on OverDrive. The Libby app is OverDrive's newer reading app, and it provides mobile access to the collection.

Access OverDrive eBooks and audiobooks on a phone or tablet

  1. Go to the Libby website-external site and download the Libby app to your device.
  2. Select 'Yes' to confirm you have a library membership. Then select 'I'll search for a library'.
  3. Search for 'Boroondara Library Service' and log in with your library membership number and PIN.

Listen to OverDrive audiobooks on a laptop or PC

  1. Go to the OverDrive website-external site and log in using your membership number and PIN.
  2. Select a title, select 'Borrow', choose the loan period, and then select 'Borrow' again.
  3. Select 'Listen now in browser'.

Bolinda BorrowBox collection

Bolinda BorrowBox provides a range of eBooks and audiobooks for adults, teens, and children.

Access BorrowBox eBooks and audiobooks on a phone or tablet

  1. Download the BorrowBox app from the BorrowBox website-external site.
  2. Search for 'Boroondara Library Service' in the app, and log in using your membership number and PIN.

Listen to BorrowBox audiobooks on a laptop or PC

  1. Go to the BorrowBox website-external site and log in using your membership number and PIN.
  2. Search for a title and select 'Borrow'. Then confirm the audiobook loan.
  3. Select 'Open' when asked if you want to open or save the zip file.

Story Box Library

The Story Box Library website features Australian stories read by some of Australia's finest storytellers in video format. The stories are recommended for children aged 3 to 12 years.

Play Story Box videos on a phone or tablet

  1. Go to the Story Box Library website-external site and log in using your library membership number.
  2. Fill in your details to create a free Story Box Library account.
  3. Download the Story Box Library App from either the Apple App store website-external site for apple devices, or the Google Play website-external site for android devices.
  4. Select 'Get started', then select log in with library access.
  5. Choose 'Boroondara Library Service' and enter your membership number.
  6. Type in the password you created as part of your Story Box account creation (step 2).

Play Story Box videos on a PC or laptop

  1. Go to the Story Box Library website-external site and log in using your library membership number.
  2. Fill in your details to create a free Story Box Library account.
  3. Browse the collection to find a video to play.
