Repair and Reuse Community Day 2026

Extend the life of your everyday household items and enjoy a day of repairing, learning and connecting.

There’s something rewarding about giving a much-loved item a second chance - and that’s what our free Repair and Reuse Community Day is all about.

This event invites you to bring your broken or worn household items to be repaired instead of replaced. You’ll also receive practical advice to help you continue repairs at home.

Bring your reusable bags to take home your repaired items and freebies.

Donate and recycle

Who will be there

Get hands-on advice and expert help to give your everyday items a new lease on life. Experts include:

• Boroondara Hard Rubbish Rehome - giving away good-quality items rescued from hard rubbish.
• Kew East Community Recycling and The Ashy Eco Hub - collecting hard-to-recycle items and pre-loved items for reuse.
• Kew Toy Library - find out how to borrow from more than 3,000 toys for babies and children up to 12 years.
• Alamein Neighbourhood and Learning - watch their plaster repair demonstration.  
• North Balwyn Repair Cafe and Kew Men’s Shed - sharing repair advise for small household items and minor electrical appliances.
• Threads of Kindness (Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre), Leslie Made It and Miss Cooper Makes - showcasing items made from upcycled fabrics or scraps.

What we can help fix

• Bikes - safety checks, tune-ups and repairs from Dr Cranky’s.
• Damaged clothing and broken jewellery - minor mending, repairs and advice from Wunder Weave and Emma Grace.
• Garden tools - professional sharpening by The Sharpener for manual tools, including secateurs, loppers, hedge shears, shovels, trowels and hoes. Electrical tools, axes and saws can’t be accepted.

Activities and free items

• Make gift boxes or reusable cotton pads for makeup removal. Bring your old calendars or firm paper.
• Enjoy a free coffee in a reusable cup or lemon gelati served in a waste free cone or real lemon cup (limited to the first 200 people).
• Collect free sample bags of rich compost made from FOGO materials.
• Take home preloved books from our libraries.
• Bring reusable jars or containers to get free samples of eco-friendly hand and body wash, laundry or dishwashing liquid (500 ml per person).
