Homelessness is a growing national problem, and the impacts can be seen in Boroondara with Council regularly receiving reports from community members about people sleeping rough, and service providers are reporting an increased demand for outreach, housing, emergency relief and mental health support.
Homelessness Week (Monday 3 August to Sunday 9 August 2026) aims to raise awareness about the impact of homelessness in Australia via national and local community events, including providing information about support and educating communities on how they can make a difference.
In partnership with local housing community housing provider, Servants Community Housing, we’ll hold a film screening event at the Lido Cinema in Hawthorn, which will include a lived-experience speaker and morning tea to follow.
This event is an opportunity for the Boroondara community to listen and learn from people experiencing homelessness in Boroondara, through the documentary “Love in the walls” and hear from a local social housing resident with lived experience during the Q&A.
Doors open at 10:15 am.
In a Melbourne social housing community, this moving 60-minute documentary explores residents’ resilience amid Australia’s deepening housing crisis. Facing loss, systemic challenges, and societal marginalization, they seek to reclaim hope and identity. With raw vulnerability, the film probes how those enduring hardship assert their humanity and whether meaningful coexistence across class divides is possible, urging reflection on shared dignity and connection in an unequal world.
The movie screening will be followed by a local lived-experience speaker and followed by free morning tea.
