This year’s Budget includes Council’s biggest-ever investment in tackling climate change.

We’ve committed $3.9 million this financial year to work with our community to reduce emissions and protect our environment and wellbeing.

It’s the first instalment of funding driving the projects in our new Climate Action Plan Implementation Plan, covering 2 financial years. A further $4 million is committed for 2026–27.

What does the plan do?

While the Climate Action Plan sets out our long-term goals, the implementation plan outlines the steps we'll take to reach them.

It sets out pathways for us to achieve the actions and will help us track progress. It includes actions we'll deliver on our own, with our community or with other organisations.

What does this mean for you?

Across Boroondara, many people and businesses are already making changes to live more sustainably. We want to help more people take the next step.

Our plan focuses on achievable, targeted solutions to help you cut emissions at home and on the move.

  • Helping households go electric: We’re looking at ways to offer financial support for people to swap gas appliances for electric.
  • Better EV charging access: We’re installing more public electric vehicle chargers for easy access and to encourage our community to make the switch.
  • Supporting renters: We’ll help renters and lower-income households make simple, low-cost upgrades to save energy at home.
  • Working with landlords and body corporates: We’ll develop a program to improve energy efficiency in multi-unit buildings.
  • Community education: We’ll keep delivering programs, education and events explaining simple, cost-effective ways to take climate action.

What about Council?

Here’s what we’re doing at Council:

  • More electric Council vehicles: We’ll transition Council vehicles to electric or other low-emissions options.
  • Tracking our progress: We’ll stay accountable, tracking and sharing data on emissions from both Council and the community.
  • Greener Council buildings: We’ll keep upgrading Council buildings to make them more energy efficient.

Mapping out our Greenways

We’re investing an additional $3 million to expand and connect our Greenways network. Greenways are continuous paths that run through parks, reserves and other green spaces. They’re shared by pedestrians and cyclists, linking important places in Boroondara. They’ll help encourage active, sustainable travel and reduce car use.
