Strength training can assist with chronic conditions such as arthritis, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. It also improves balance and coordination reducing the risk of falling. No previous experience with gym or weights is necessary and each exercise is guided by our qualified instructor. We run over 70 full year courses – languages, exercise and walking groups, literature and film groups, music courses, art classes, extending your thinking sessions, history groups and travel presentations. These are all led by member tutors. Plus more than 80 short courses each term presented by local, interstate, and international lecturers. With regular visits, both volunteers and older people can build meaningful connections and make a real difference in each other's lives. Social Companionship Initiative Days: Thursday Location: Hawthorn Library, 584 Glenferrie Road Hawthorn Price: Free The Social Companionship Initiative is a friendly intergenerational activity at Hawthorn Library, pairing Swinburne University nursing students with older residents for weekly conversations. The get togethers help to reduce loneliness, build community. It also assists future nurses to practice empathy, listening, and person centred care. We offer talks on topics of interest by guest speakers and schedule excursions throughout the year. Runs on Mondays from 9 am to 2:30 pm. Cost: $15 annual membership.
