Entry information – Piano

Participants must read and agree to the General rules before entering the competition.

Piano Solo – 8 years and under

Date: 10 am Saturday 27 May (Finals at 12 pm Saturday 19 August)
Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre
Registration fee: $25
Time limit: 3 minutes
Requirements: Music of own choice for solo piano. Participants must be available for the finals on Saturday 19 August, if they are selected. Participants may play the same piece at the final that was played at the heats, or select a new work
Prizes: 1st – $30, 2nd – $20, 3rd – $10

Adjudicator: To be confirmed
Participants who are either related to the adjudicator or have been taught privately by the adjudicator within 6 months prior to the date of event are ineligible to participate in this section.

Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre

Time limit: 3 minutes
Requirements: Music of own choice for solo piano. Participants must be available for the finals on Saturday 19 August, if they are selected. Participants may play the same piece at the final that was played at the heats, or select a new work.
Prizes: 1st - $40, 2nd – $25, 3rd – $15

Date: From 10 am Saturday 10 June (Finals at 1:30 pm Saturday 19 August)

Piano Solo – 16 years and under

Date: 10 am Saturday 17 June (Finals at 12 pm Sunday 20 August)

Requirements: Music of own choice for solo piano. Participants must be available for the finals on Sunday 20 August, if they are selected. Participants may play the same piece at the final that was played at the heats, or select a new work.

Piano Solo – 18 years and under

Date: 6:30 pm Wednesday 21 June and 6:30 pm, Thursday 22 June (Winners announced at conclusion of Thursday 22 June session)
Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre

Time limit: 8 minutes
Requirements: Music of own choice for solo piano.
Prizes: 1st – $90, 2nd – $55, 3rd – $35

Piano Solo – Open

Date: 6:30 pm Tuesday 6 June, 6:30 pm Wednesday 7 June and 6:30 pm Thursday 8 June (Winners announced at conclusion of Thursday 8 June session)
Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre
Registration fee: $25
Time limit: 15 minutes

Requirements: Music of own choice for solo piano. Two works to be performed
Prizes: 1st – $125, 2nd – $75, 3rd – $50

Participants who are either related to the adjudicator or have been taught privately by the adjudicator within 6 months prior to the date of event are ineligible to participate in this section.

Piano Concerto Award – Open

Heats are held on the following days:

  • 6:30 pm Monday 22 May
  • 6:30 pm Tuesday 23 May
  • 6:30 pm Wednesday 24 May

The finals will be held at 2 pm Sunday 10 September. 

Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre
Time limit: Heats – 10 to 20 minutes
Final – 15 to 25 minutes

Prizes: 1st – $1000, 2nd – $600, 3rd – $400

Section requirements:

Entrants shall nominate a single excerpt (movement or movements) from a piano concerto to perform in their heat with a piano accompaniment. 

From the heats, 3 finalists will be selected who will be required to play a movement or movements from a concerto taken from the list of suitable works.

Finalists will nominate a minimum of 2 preferences from this list, with the final choice of repertoire chosen by the conductor.

Finalists will also be required to attend 2 rehearsals with the orchestra at Hawthorn Arts Centre:

  • 6:30 pm Thursday 7 September
  • 6:30 pm Friday 8 September

Participants who are either related to the adjudicator or have been taught privately by the adjudicator within 6 months prior to the date of event are ineligible to participate in this section.

Accompanist: Participants must provide their own accompanist.
Final is accompanied by Camerata Orchestra.

Piano Solo (non-competitive) – 12 years and under

Date: 10 am Sunday 20 August
Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre
Registration fee: $25
Time limit: 3 minutes

Requirements: Music of own choice for solo piano.
Eligibility: Participants cannot register for this event if they enter any of the competitive sections.
Prizes: In non-competitive sections, there is no placing or prizes. Participants will receive a participation certificate and written feedback from the adjudicator.

Piano Solo (non-competitive) – 13 to 18 years

Date: 10 am Sunday 20 August
Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre
Registration fee: $25
Time limit: 5 minutes

Requirements: Music of own choice for solo piano.
Eligibility: Participants cannot register for this event if they enter enter any of the competitive sections.
Prizes: In non-competitive sections, there is no placing or prizes. Participants will receive a participation certificate and written feedback from the adjudicator.
