Kew Philharmonic Choir: Music of Renaissance Venice

During the Renaissance period, Venice and its unique mantime setting were reflected in splendid art, architecture and music, represented here by masterpieces by Giovanni Gabrieli (c.1553/57-1612) and Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643).
Both composers held the position of director of music at the Basilica of San Marco – both the private chapel of the Doge, the elected ruler of Venice, and a cathedral tor the entire republic. The interior of the church, decorated with mosaics in gold and various other colours, lent itself to the echoing sound of singers and Instrumentalists located in different parts or the building. Our concert aims to recreate something of that experience in the Hawthorn Arts Centre!
We will perform several of Gabrieli's pieces featuring his use of separated singers and instrumentalists, notably 'Jubilate Deo', a joyous hymn of praise, dating from about 1587. The concert will also include several sections from Monteverdi's great 'Vespers' of 1610, as well as his late setting of Psalm 112 ('Beatus vir'), a brilliant work pointing forward to the rich complexity or the Baroque era.
