Ten sculptures by local sculptor Leopoldine Mimovich are sited throughout the picturesque Alexandra Garden in Kew. The gardens feature expansive lawn areas surrounded by beautiful avenues of mature trees creating shady glades and pools of dappled sunlight for these heartwarming works.
Leopoldine Mimovich was born in 1920 and grew up in the village of Sankt Johann in the Pongau region of Austria (now a part of Italy). At the age of 20, she moved to Vienna where she studied clay modelling and drawing. She later attended the School of Wood Sculpture in Hallstatt from 1943 to 1947. Following her marriage to Ljubisa Mimovich, the couple migrated to Australia in 1949 and eventually settled in Kew, where Leopoldine established her studio.
Leopoldine undertook commissions which reflected her Austrian traditions and Catholic background. A bronze and wood sculptor, painter and etcher, she was awarded an OAM for services to sculpture in 1985. Leopoldine's works are represented in numerous churches and public buildings around the country and overseas.
A plaque with the works reads:
The ten bronze sculptures sited throughout the Alexandra Gardens are the work of local sculptor Mrs. Leopoldine Mimovich O.A.M.
The sculptures were given to the people of Kew by Mrs. Mimovich for their enjoyment. They were officially accepted by Mayor of Kew Councillor Michael Montalto JP on the 11th February, 1990.
