The Intersection is a series of sculptures by local artist Anderson Hunt, located in the eastern breezeway outside Hawthorn Arts Centre. This series of works explores how humans interact with the built environment on both a physical and emotional level.

Originally conceived for Beswick Square on the corner of Glenferrie and Burwood Roads, Anderson Hunt spent 5 hours over a weekend watching people move about the space as it revealed itself as a complex arena for interconnected relationships. It became a playground for 3 small children as they jumped around, a place for an elderly man to take a phone call and a relaxing area for some local café workers to take their break and have a laugh. This became the inspiration for The Intersection.

While the works have been relocated to the other side of Hawthorn Arts Centre, they remain an excellent reflection of both public spaces, and how the community comes together and co-exists in each place.

Since 1995 Anderson has been a principal artist and director at Down Street Studios in Collingwood, producing innovative site-specific public sculpture, major council commissions and a number of mixed media installations and exhibitions. His works engage with audiences through the themes of environment, landscape and memory.
