Through the development of the Boroondara Community Plan, you told us that having high-quality infrastructure, services and facilities across Boroondara is important to you. That’s why we are committed to investing in the upgrade and renewal of infrastructure each year. Here is a snapshot of some of the exciting refurbishments undertaken over the past year, as well as some redevelopments that are currently underway.
Completed projects
Alamein Neighbourhood and Learning Centre
Alamein Neighbourhood and Learning Centre recently underwent a significant refurbishment, completed in February.
The centre’s popular classes and community programs are back up and running, with visitors enjoying upgraded facilities including a new state-of-the-art computer room, all-purpose classroom, and a meeting room for community use. The kitchen, reception and common areas have also been modernised.
Rathmines Road Reserve pavilion renewal
The Rathmines Road Reserve pavilion has undergone a redevelopment, including an internal refurbishment and external additions, while maintaining and celebrating the original heritage character of the precinct.
The refurbishment and additions to the south and east ends of the building provide a multi-purpose space for sporting clubs and the broader community, and will help facilitate an increase in junior and female sport participation by including additional change rooms and female-friendly facilities.
The works were completed in April and the new space is now being enjoyed by junior, senior and women’s football teams, and by cricket teams in the summer.
Deepdene Tennis Club
Refurbishment of Deepdene Tennis Club’s facilities was finished in February this year, creating a space for club members and the wider community to enjoy, with an interior facelift including new flooring, lighting, benchtops, new electronic access points and additional storage, as well as upgrades to toilet and shower facilities.
A fresh coat of paint has brightened the exterior, while an upgraded path from the front gate to the tennis courts has improved accessibility.
This will be complemented by an accessible carpark expected to be completed before the end of this financial year.
New space for Bowen Street Community Centre
A carefully considered design to make use of facilities from the former South Camberwell Maternal Health Centre (relocated to the Camberwell Community Centre in 2021) and enhance the adjacent Bowen Street Community Centre was completed in November 2021.
The new multipurpose centre provides spaces for the entire community to enjoy, including a new, larger meeting room, artroom with kitchenette, training facilities, an extended and updated kitchen, and additional storage and upgraded amenities throughout.
The exterior received a facelift with a new roof, signage and updated colour scheme.
Upcoming works
Glenferrie Oval and Michael Tuck Stand revitalisation
We’re planning an exciting revitalisation of the Glenferrie Oval precinct, as part of Council’s commitment to delivering what’s important to our community.
The revitalisation will involve aspects of our Glenferrie Oval improvement plans, including renovations to the Michael Tuck Stand, to restore this iconic heritage building and enable better use of this historic sporting facility.
The Ferguson Stand will be removed and the surrounding area reconfigured, increasing open space and enhancing landscape amenity. We’ll seek community feedback, to help ensure a vibrant future for the Glenferrie Oval precinct and its spaces, as both projects progress in their planning.

Walmer Street Bridge construction
The Walmer Street Bridge crosses the Yarra River between Kew and Richmond/Abbotsford. It plays an important role for pedestrians and in the regional bicycle network, providing connections into the Melbourne CBD.
The land bridge section of the bridge in Kew is in poor condition and must be replaced. Supported by funding from the Australian Government, we are redeveloping this section to make it wider and safer.
Works are expected to begin in mid to late-2022, during which time the whole bridge will be closed for about 8 months. We encourage cyclists and pedestrians who use the bridge to consider alternative routes or modes of transport during this time.
